Island Photographers
This September, the Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts (RHA) opens A R C H I P E L A G O, the largest group photography exhibition it has ever staged, a landmark moment for lens-based art in Ireland.
Curated by RHA’s Davey Moor, the exhibition brings together seventeen intergenerational artists responding to the vast scale of the RHA’s Main Gallery, the largest single gallery exhibition space in the country. Many have embraced the challenge with in-the-round installations and ambitious formats that push far beyond the traditional photo show.
The works span a spectrum of contemporary concerns: the poetry of the everyday, human and altered landscapes, identity, sexuality, borders both visible and invisible, and reflections on Ireland’s changing cultural spirit.
The project is a collaboration with Island Photographers, an artist-led collective that has become a vital voice for Irish photography. Since its founding, the group has championed photographers through talks, workshops, and exhibitions, fostering a renewed sense of community. With A R C H I P E L A G O, they aim to mark not just a milestone for the RHA, but a broader cultural moment for photography in Ireland — one that signals much more to come.
